Some big changes around here.

First of all, I would like to say that FreeHostia is dumb. But what do you expect from a free web host? If you try out Freewebs, you’ll see that things can be worse.

All webhost stupidity claims aside, I’m going to make as many changes for the better as I can just on this blog.

First of all, I’m going to make the new theme that I was planning on making. Also, I’ll need to see where I can host this blog elsewhere that might be a better host. Okay, I see that I’m drifting back into I-hate-this-webhost land, so I’ll try to pull myself out of it.

WordPress Comment Moderation Notifier

I found the following on PhotoMatt.net:

The WordPress Comment Moderation Notifier puts a little thing in your Windows mini-icon tray that let’s you know when you have a new comment, much like Outlook or Thunderbird do with email. Cool! Now we just need a Mac version, maybe using Growl?

I’ve installed it on my computer, and I tested it, and it’s working great!  If you have a self-hosted WordPress blog, you should try it out!

The dieing computer

Ok, so my old computer is slowly dieing. Slowly might be the wrong word. It is down to less than 200mb out of a total 10gb.  (Both of those numbers might look a bit sad to you tech-savvy people out there)  I’m thankful, however that the external hard drive connected to it is only about 5% filled out of a total of more than 20 times the space on the main hard drive.

Ok, so you’re with your friend, and you need a new amulet of strength because you lost your old one while doing a slayer task. You go to your bank, you get your uncut ruby, a few runes, a gold ore and a ball of wool. Then, you trade them to your friend in return for nothing and they make the amulet as soon as they can and return it to you. They then get banned for real world item trading. This was obviously the wrong thing to do on Jagex’s part, but let’s think of ways to avoid that ban. And what if your friend is offline? Here’s how you do it:

Not much happening…

There isn’t much happening in my life… I go to school every day, but there’s nothing newsworthy that happens. I work on my blog as much as I can, but I’m just not able to do everything I want to with it perfectly. I haven’t had anything to blog about since 2 days ago. FreeHostia is dumb and won’t let me use the php mail() function, so I can’t set up the forums that Sir Soybean and I were planning on…

I guess I’ll just re-iterate a few things that I’ve said in the past.

TeamSpeak helps stop unfair Runescape bannings of RSBandB members

TeamSpeak, the replacement for the old chat server on RSBandB, is just getting started. There have been an average of about 1-5 people on at a time, but this is just the first day. TeamSpeak is about the best option we have available for the RSBandB chat. RuneScape private chat just doesn’t work with the whole clan. We aren’t in the same place, so public chat is out of the question. Clan chat is out since there have been so many unfair bannings on the clan chat. MSN and any of the other major IM programs out there won’t work because we need to be able to all communicate at the same time, plus, there’s no way we can use them without taking our eyes off whatever we’re doing. If we did take our eyes off of RuneScape, we could be killed by random events, reported for macroing, or even lose friends by missing their private messages.

The reasons Jagex is stupid

The following is a list of reasons that Jagex is dumb, I will start off with an inspirational quote.

And here is the list:

1. They don’t ban macroers even though they say they do.
   Evidence:
2. They automate everything from customer support queries to abuse reports to ban appeals.

3. They won’t show us our skills if we aren’t in the top million and level 30 or higher.
   I don’t need evidence on this one.
4. They have an investigations in the community team, but I’ve never seen any jmods on any fansites…
   Once again, no evidence needed.

Ok, maybe not an ENTIRE new theme…

So I’m not going to make an entire new theme for my blog… I’ll just make a few tweaks to make the theme I have the best it can be without losing the theme’s feel. One of the first updates I’m doing is banning a certain user agent from my blog because I think they’re trying to DDoS me… I’ve had about 20 404 errors in my 404 log in a row yesterday from the same user agent.

But for now, let’s just hope that I’ve fixed the problem. One of the other things I am going to do to my theme is implement more colors into my comments css.

A New Theme

I am thinking about making a custom theme for my blog, and I need some ideas. If it turns out well, I’ll open-source it and I might think about putting it on the WordPress theme catalog.

My ideas are:

• Rounded corners
• As few images as possible
• Gravatar
• Alternating comment colors
• Official comments as a different color
• Lots of customization that can be done without editing source code files
• Multiple sidebars
• I might think of more later

The ideas that have been suggested that I liked are:

• Just stick with the old theme

I have implemented an avatar system into the blog. Since Automattic has aquired Gravatar, as soon as they have all of their setup done, all the WordPress.com users will have avatars on this blog. If anyone abuses this feature, I will ban them from the blog and delete all of their offending comments.

I’ve implemented this feature using PhotoMatt.net’s two-lines-of-php method.

Googlebot is spamming me o.0

I’m notified on every 404 error via an rss feed by my blog.  When googlebot started indexing non-existant pages, I got spammed.  The feature that I installed to be a notification of broken links turned into a way that googlebot (unknowingly) spammed me!

You can see this WordPress.org support forums topic for the way that I solved the problem.
